The Hits and Misses of Macau - The Absolute Must Sees, And What You Can Do Without!

10/20/2014

Over the last decade, Macau has become the gambling center of the world.

While Macau’s economy relies heavily on gambling, Macau has much more to offer travelers than meets the eye.

The following are some of the places you must plan to visit when you plan your Macau vacation itinerary.

Bungee Jump from Macau Tower

Picture
If you are going to Macau as a thrill-seeker, visiting Centro de Convenções e Entretenimento da Torre de Macau is a must!

It isn’t every day that one has the opportunity to bungee jump from the second highest commercial skyjump in the world.

I know that laughing in the face of danger is not for everyone, so while you watch those above soar in the sky, check out one the tower’s observation deck, shopping spots, and its numerous restaurants.

Speaking of Restaurants...

If you only eat at one restaurant while in Macau, it has to be Lord Stow’s Bakery.

Lord Stow’s Bakery’s claim to fame is that they are the “creator of the egg tart now famous throughout Asia.” Ranked the #2 restaurant in Macau, by TripAdvisor, both natives and tourists flock to this hot spot to indulge in Macau’s special cuisine.

The most recent review of this establishment is nothing but a glowing recommendation:

“My little heaven…the egg tart is so yummy and heavenly…the tea and juices are so fresh…”

City of Dreams

“City of Dreams” sounds like a catchy heading, but it is actually the name of one of Macau’s finest entertainment centers.

This would be a great place for sleeping accommodations—it would offer you an abundance of restaurants, shows, and stores within minutes from you room.

Additionally, their hotel rooms offer you the luxury of playing live poker from the comfort of your room. (It’s not every day that you can play poker in an oversized, plush robe!)

While the sites of Macau might seem like heaven on Earth, there are some tourist traps that you are going to want to avoid.

What many people don’t realize is that Macau is the most densely populated region in the world. This means that you will be waiting in lines for coffee, at restaurants, and for attractions.

The following are some of the biggest offenders when it comes to tourist traps.

MACAU TOURIST TRAP #1: Fisherman's Wharf

Because what is more fun that a wharf, right? Unlike some of the famous piers of the world, Macau’s Fisherman’s Wharf has nothing to offer tourists. Voted the most popular review on VirtualTour, this review should steer you clear of this waste of a trip.

“Well, there is practically nothing to do there unless you would love to take loads of pictures with pretty backgrounds.”

Below is a pretty picture of the wharf…now scratch it off your list!

MACAU TOURIST TRAP #3: Shopping & Souvenirs

Unless you win a lot of money while gambling in Macau, I would avoid the touristy shopping centers. As the nation with the highest GDP per capita by purchasing power parity, a lot of their items are overpriced (compared to other Asian countries). With over 70% of the government’s revenue coming from gaming, tourism, and hospitality, it is important that they get the most out of its visitors while they are on the island.

Thinking of retiring to Macau? You might be in the right frame of mind. Macau has the world’s second highest life expectancy rate. So if you make it to Macau and think you’ve found heaven, you might think of sticking around for the rest of your life.
