DRIFTER TIPS: Traveling South Asia on a Budget

South Asia has long been a draw for travelers, and with good reason; the region offers the chance to see and experience things seldom seen in the Western world.

With that being said, a trip like that costs money, and from flights to lodging to food, the expenses can pile up. Here are some tips to help save you money during your holiday to the East.

Know where you’re going

When I travel, I like not knowing where I’m going tomorrow. The freedom this allows is exhilarating, but it comes at a cost. Namely, the cost is the cost, in that finding a bus or train a day or two before you want to leave is much more expensive than buying beforehand. Therefore, if you know you want to spend 3 days in Nepal before heading off to Tibet for a week, buy transportation beforehand. What you lose in spontaneity you gain in dollars saved.

Shop Around And Find the Best Deals

Just like buying a car or mattress, you get the best deal when you shop around. Check all the comparison sites when you’re booking your flight in order to make sure you get a cheap holiday online. A good tip is to search two or more to find the best deals, and then book flights or accommodation directly with the tour operator or airline.

Do as the locals do

If you see that trinket at the market, don’t pay full price. Haggling in most Asian countries is not only expected, it’s welcome. Stallholders expect to negotiate, so there’s no need to feel embarrassed when you ask for a discount. Often, when they see it’s a tourist, the price automatically goes up. So keep on haggling and save some money.

Price the taxi ride before getting in

South Asia can be very cheap to travel in, but be wary of locals taking advantage of your good natured travelers mentality. Taxis are abundant in big cities, but make sure you settle on a price before you get in (negotiating is ok here as well). This ensures that your price won’t skyrocket once you reach your destination. Also, make sure that you give them your exact destination, as it’s been known for taxi drivers to take a few detours before arriving at your specified place. Knowing where you're going and agreeing on a price beforehand will make sure you are not shortchanged at the end of the ride.

Make Use of All the Extras

Also, keep in mind that if you stay at hotels (as opposed to hostels) they usually provide complimentary toiletries. This includes razors, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. While they not be of the highest quality, they’re still free.

The benefit of planning a budget trip in countries from India to Indonesia is the low cost of living that you will help you save as a general rule. With the right approach, therefore, it’s simple to save money on your South Asian travel.

These are some really important, but ignored ways to save on money. Southeast Asia is exciting without a doubt and if it's explored on a budget, nothing like it.

Great tips bud; I like the idea of staying in a hotel once every week or two. You'll get that small bit of luxury where you can get a good nights rest as well as stock up on much needed toiletries! lol
